The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant

The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.
It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and among the 10 largest in the world. It is located in southeastern Ukraine, near the city of Enerhodar. It has six reactors, each with a capacity of 950 MW, and a total output of 5,700 MW.

The plant was built between 1984 and 1995 and was operated by Energoatom, the state-owned company that runs all of Ukraine's nuclear power plants. The plant provided about 22% of Ukraine's electricity and was considered a strategic asset for the country.

However, in February 2022, the plant was seized by Russian troops as part of their invasion and occupation of eastern Ukraine. Since then, the plant has been under Russian control and has been a source of tension and conflict between the two countries.

Ukraine has accused Russia of planning to sabotage or attack the plant, which could cause a nuclear disaster or a radiation leak. Ukraine has also claimed that Russia has placed explosives on the roofs of some of the reactors and has used the plant as a military base.

Russia has denied these allegations and has accused Ukraine of preparing to bomb the plant with nuclear waste or drones. Russia has also claimed that it is operating the plant safely and securely and that it is providing electricity to the local population.

The situation at the plant is very dangerous and unpredictable. It poses a threat to the environment, the health, and the security of millions of people in Ukraine, Russia, and beyond. It also raises questions about the legal and ethical issues of using nuclear power plants as weapons or targets of war.
