Operation Roaring Lion
Complete War Update

US–ISRAEL vs IRAN · 28 FEB – 29 MARCH 2026 · DAY 29 OF WAR

The Middle East has been permanently altered. On February 28, 2026, Israel and the United States launched the largest coordinated military campaign in the region since 2003 — targeting Iran's leadership, nuclear infrastructure, missile arsenals, and naval power in a single, devastating opening blow. This is everything you need to know — from Day 1 to now.

How the War Began

28 February 2026 — Zero Hour. At dawn, without prior public declaration to the US Congress, President Donald Trump announced via an eight-minute video on Truth Social that the United States and Israel had launched a massive, coordinated preemptive military strike on Iran. The US called it Operation Epic Fury. Israel called it Operation Roaring Lion.

⚡ The Opening Blow

In the first 12 hours alone, US forces carried out 900 strikes against Iranian targets. Israel simultaneously deployed nearly 200 fighter jets hitting close to 500 targets in what the IAF described as the largest combat sortie in its history. This was preceded by a deep intelligence penetration that allowed the elimination of 40 senior Iranian officials within 40 seconds of the opening strike.

The most consequential strike of the opening phase was the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei at his compound on Pasteur Street, Tehran. Along with Khamenei, the strike killed IRGC Commander Mohammad Pakpour, Chief of Staff Abdolrahim Mousavi, Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, and over 40 top figures of the Islamic Republic — decapitating the entire Iranian military command structure in a single morning.

🕌 Nuclear Context — Why Now?

Just one day before the strikes, on 27 February, Oman's Foreign Minister had announced a diplomatic "breakthrough" — Iran had reportedly agreed to never stockpile enriched uranium. However, US envoy Steve Witkoff stated that Iran had actually insisted on its "inalienable right" to enrich uranium and boasted that its 460 kg of 60%-enriched uranium could build 11 nuclear bombs. The US struck before any ceasefire framework was finalized.

Day-by-Day War Timeline

28 February 2026

Zero Hour — Operation Begins

900 US strikes + 200 IAF jets hit 500 targets. Khamenei and 40 top officials killed. Iran's air defences, naval vessels, and missile sites targeted in the largest military operation since the 2003 Iraq War.

1 March 2026

Iran Retaliates — War Expands Regionally

Iran fires 500+ ballistic missiles and nearly 2,000 drones — 40% toward Israel, 60% toward US bases across the Gulf. Six US servicemembers killed at Port Shuaiba, Kuwait. Iranian strikes hit Dubai Airport, Burj Al Arab debris fire, and UAE ports. Iran's IRGC drone carrier IRIS Shahid Bagheri sunk.

3–4 March 2026

Tehran Bombed — State Broadcaster Destroyed

Iran's national broadcaster IRIB headquarters hit. Parliament building targeted. The Iranian warship IRIN Dena torpedoed by a US Navy submarine off Sri Lanka — 101 sailors remain missing. Trump declares: "Just about everything's been knocked out."

7–8 March 2026

Trump Demands "Unconditional Surrender"

Trump shifts war objective from urging civilians to overthrow the regime to demanding Iran's "unconditional surrender." A US soldier dies of wounds at Prince Sultan Air Base — the 7th US casualty. US Secretary of War Hegseth announces March 10 as "the most intense day of strikes yet."

8 March 2026

Mojtaba Khamenei Elected New Supreme Leader

Iran's Assembly of Experts elects Mojtaba Khamenei — son of the assassinated Supreme Leader — as the new Supreme Leader. Trump calls him "lightweight" and warns he will not last without US approval. Chants of "Death to Mojtaba" heard in Tehran apartments.

12 March 2026

KC-135 Crash — 6 More US Servicemembers Killed

A US KC-135 aerial refuelling aircraft crashes over western Iraq, killing all six American crew members on board. CENTCOM states the crash was not due to enemy fire. Total US casualties reach 13 killed, ~140 wounded.

17 March 2026

Ali Larijani Assassinated

Israel assassinates Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council — one of the most powerful figures in the post-Khamenei power structure. Iran's retaliatory missile hit-rate falls to under 6%, compared to 17% at the war's peak.

18 March 2026

Iran's Energy Hit — Largest Strike on Oil Assets

Israel and the US carry out the largest yet strikes on Iranian energy assets. Over a dozen US MQ-9 Reaper drones have been destroyed by Iran through the conflict. Saudi Arabia intercepts 64 Iranian drones in a single day. Qatar intercepts ballistic missiles headed toward Doha.

25 March 2026

IDF Strikes Isfahan — Submarine R&D Centre Destroyed

The IDF targets Iran's Underwater Research Centre in Isfahan — the only facility in Iran responsible for designing and developing submarines. Multiple strike waves hit Tehran's regime infrastructure the same day. Iranian missile launches continue but at dramatically reduced intensity.

29 March 2026 (Today)

War Ongoing — Over 3,000 Iranian Targets Hit by IDF Alone

The IDF confirms striking over 3,000 Iranian regime targets since Day 1, including 50+ targets in the latest overnight wave targeting ballistic missile storage and launch sites. The war is in its 29th day with no ceasefire in sight. UN demands remain unanswered.

Iran's Military Damage Assessment

Domain Status Assessment
Air Defence ~85% Destroyed Radars, interceptors, detection systems largely eliminated. IDF has near-total air superiority over Iran.
Missile Production Zero Capacity Pre-war production was ~100 ballistic missiles/month. Now zero. 700+ missiles destroyed in storage.
Missile Launchers 70%+ Destroyed 300+ launcher arrays hit. Hegseth states ballistic missile launch capability reduced by 90%.
Naval Fleet 50+ Vessels Sunk IRGC carrier, destroyer IRIN Dena, and dozens of naval vessels eliminated. Strait of Hormuz blockade capacity severely degraded.
IRGC Command Decapitated 6,000+ IRGC killed, 15,000+ wounded. Field commanders now operating without central coordination.
Nuclear Programme Severely Damaged Enrichment sites hit in June 2025 (Midnight Hammer). Current campaign targets production chains and remaining facilities.
Air Force Neutralized Hegseth: "Iran has no air force." No Iranian aircraft have challenged coalition operations.
Defense Industrial Base Years Set Back Dozens of military R&D centers, weapons factories, and research labs destroyed. Reconstitution capacity: near zero.

"Iran has no air defenses. Iran has no air force. Iran has no navy."

— US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, March 13, 2026

The Human Cost

Every war is measured not just in military objectives, but in human lives. The 2026 Iran War has extracted an enormous toll on all sides — from American soldiers to Iranian civilians caught between the regime's aggression and coalition airstrikes.

⚰️ Casualties — Iran

Iran's health ministry reported at least 1,444 civilian deaths in early March. By March 18, the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights estimated 5,300+ Iranian military personnel killed. Iranian cities turned into ghost towns as civilians stayed indoors. Schools were ordered closed. Prisoners at Evin Prison received limited food and water. The UN World Food Programme warned of severe long-term global food insecurity due to Strait of Hormuz disruptions.

🇺🇸 US Casualties

13 US servicemembers killed and approximately 140 wounded since the war began. Six were killed in the KC-135 crash over Iraq on March 12. Six others died in the Port Shuaiba drone attack on March 1 in Kuwait. One died following injuries from the Prince Sultan Air Base attack on March 8 in Saudi Arabia.

Regional Fallout — Gulf States Under Fire

Iran has not limited its retaliatory attacks to Israel and US military bases. The Islamic Republic has struck targets across the broader Middle East — from Kuwait to Qatar, from Saudi Arabia to the UAE — seeking to internationalize the conflict and pressure Washington's Gulf allies.

64Drones Intercepted by Saudi Arabia (Single Day)
✈️Dubai Airport Temporarily Suspended — Debris Fire
🚢Fujairah Port Fire — Oil Loading Halted
💰Global Oil Prices Spiking — Dow Fell 400+ Points

Qatar's energy minister warned in early March that if the war continues, Gulf producers may be forced to declare force majeure and halt exports — a move that could "bring down economies of the world." A near-total halt of tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz threatens global fuel and fertiliser supplies, with cascading impacts on global food prices.

🇮🇳 भारत की नज़र से — India's Strategic Interest

India imports approximately 80% of its crude oil needs. A prolonged disruption of the Strait of Hormuz — through which nearly 20% of the world's oil passes — will directly drive up petrol and diesel prices in India. The Indian economy, already navigating global headwinds, faces inflationary pressure from every escalation in this war.

Diplomatically, India has sought balance. India's warship INS Milan 2026 had Iran's IRIN Dena participating in naval exercises in early February — the same vessel later torpedoed by a US submarine. New Delhi officially called for de-escalation while protecting its diaspora of 8+ million Indians in the Gulf region.

India–Israel defense cooperation, which reached record highs in 2025, continues. Meanwhile, India–Iran ties through the Chabahar Port corridor are under severe strain as the Islamic Republic fights for its military survival.

Current Status — Where Things Stand on Day 29

As of March 29, 2026, the 2026 Iran War is ongoing with no ceasefire agreement in sight. The United Nations has repeatedly demanded a ceasefire, but neither the US nor Israel has agreed to halt operations. Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has pledged to continue resistance, though Iran's military capabilities have been reduced to a fraction of their pre-war strength.

📌 Current Situation Summary

✅ Iran's missile launch rate has fallen over 90% since Day 1.
✅ IDF has struck 3,000+ targets; US forces struck 5,000+ targets.
✅ Iran's entire top military leadership from February 28 is dead or replaced.
⚠️ Mojtaba Khamenei in power — pledging continuation of resistance.
⚠️ Iran continues drone and missile strikes on Gulf states at reduced scale.
❌ No ceasefire. UN demands ignored. Peace talks have collapsed.
❌ Global food and energy security under severe stress.

Trump has hinted at a post-war vision for Iran modeled on the US–Venezuela oil relationship — a new Iranian government cooperating on oil production without hostility. Whether Iran's battered regime accepts such terms, or whether the war escalates further toward a ground operation, remains the defining geopolitical question of 2026.

"Operation Roaring Lion is not a punitive strike. It is the deliberate dismantling of the regime's military nervous system."

— Foundation for Defense of Democracies, March 19, 2026

What began as a surgical decapitation strike has evolved into the most sustained, systematic degradation of a state military in the post-Cold War era. The war has already rewritten the rules of modern warfare — demonstrating what air power, intelligence penetration, and coalition precision strikes can achieve in under 30 days. History is being made — and the full chapter is not yet written.
